In the spotlight…meet our designer YOLANCRIS
We’ve love to hear about why you decided to become a bridal wear designer?
We (YolanCris’ founders), Yolanda and Cristina, are sisters and we grew together surrounded by organza, tulle and silk at the bridal store which our mother managed in Barcelona, Spain. It was in this context that, once we were graduated at Barcelona School of Design, gradually appeared the idea of trying to revolutionize the bridal fashion.
In 2005 we decided to give rise to our dream by creating our brand turned towards natural and authentic women, very chic and contemporary for modern brides.
Where do you take inspiration from?
It can be anything. A travel, a movie, an art exposition, a woman personality, a street.
But if we have to decide what is our main inspiration, we definitely would say:
a deep love for haute couture. We often crate each bridal collection with different lines for different styles of dress. Each is identified with a part of ourselves and we love it when our brides tell us that her dress YolanCris, could be themselves on their wedding day.
If we're talking about style and shapes, we definitely get inspired by the glamour and sophistication of old Hollywood stars of the 30s and 40s are a foundation of our creative inspiration, almost iconic in our collections.
The quality of the designs and the fabrics used at that time to create unique and unique dresses, made with time and creativity, it is very similar to the process as we create each of our dresses: one by one on the mannequin, with old techniques couture as moulage and hand sewing. We try to make each of our unique dresses, is why the vintage as a concept, its uniqueness, also a recurring inspiration in our collections. Because the quality of a product is timeless. And that will always be our fetish inspiration, creating couture dresses for women with a unique personal style.
Whenever we talk about prints, laces drawings and concepts. We feel that nature is our main inspiration nowadays. Nature is in its form an extraordinary and complex structure and function, but itself is the culmination of beauty. We love nature drawings from modernism that used by craftsmen in Barcelona during modernism period. We grew up in in a very beautiful architectonics city, you only need to walk around any street to feel that time and it is inherent in our subconscious. we love anything related to s.XIX: fashion, art, paintings.
We enjoy a lot with deep study of design, pattern and seems. We’re focus on create a high quality product and the only way to achieve this goal is through hard work but showed with freshness, spontaneity, creativity and freedom.
What is your favourite piece from the 2016 collection?
Is quite difficult to choose only one gown! I create them one by one, so undoubtedly there some kind of "emotional connection" with every single wedding gown, on every single detail. But I think, I would say Urgell wedding dress. It has a very beautiful handmade embroidery and we tried to design a very couture and original back…and it is available at The White Gallery our Irish stockist.
What is your preferred fabric to work with?
It's all about lace in YolanCris gowns! we love silk guipure, fine chantilly lace, rebrodée drawings, and mixing all in an original, new and innovative design.
Who is your style icon?
In general terms, Strong, confident but very feminine Women.
When we were just a little child, our grandmother loved old Hollywood films, so we grow up watching fancy black and white movies and immediately become huge fans of the smart seduction of Heidy Lamarr and the self confident of Lauren Bacall.
as we grow up our icons, become more fashion and music idols, when we were teenagers, we were absolutely dazzle withJean Birkin or Jean Shrimpton natural and boho chic style.
Nowadays, we definitely like Gwyneth Paltrow and Emma Stone flawless stylings.
Favourite celebrity wedding dress?
Farrah Fawcett wedding dress in 1973 (marrying with Lee Majors)
She was absolutely stunning with a bishop long sleeves dress, very seventies but classy and styled with a super huge Pamela hat surrounded with natural flowers and loose hair. Simply lovely!
